Clive Robbins, a luminary in the world of music therapy, passed away last week at the age of 84. Mr. Robbins and musician Paul Nordoff collaborated in the 1950s to create a new form of music therapy to help kids with disabilities learn social and linguistic skills. Robbins pioneered the use of improvisation in music therapy to reflect a patient’s emotional state, creating empathy, improving communication, and strengthening verbal and motor abilities. His legacy is a lasting one: Nordoff-Robbins therapy continues to enhance the lives of thousands, while Nordoff-Robbins Centers for Music Therapy are on four continents.
